A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
