Close to 25,000 Lost Electricity in Queensland and Victoria Following Powerful Weather Systems

Around 25,000 homes in south-east Queensland found themselves experiencing outages on the start of the week after intense storm systems swept through the area, bringing strong winds topping over 100 km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Widespread Damage

Residents observed giant hailstones measuring up to seven centimeters in certain regions. Weather authorities verified that multiple regions across the state had been affected by significant hail.

Response teams were working to restore energy supply throughout the impacted areas, with approximately seventy teams working to handle the widespread outages.

Victoria's Weather Woes

At the same time, approximately one thousand energy customers in the southern state also encountered electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area experienced its most precipitation in 18 months.

Emergency response teams received 598 requests for assistance across the area, mainly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and flooding.

  • The Werribee area - saw significant destruction
  • Hoppers Crossing - numerous rescue reports
  • Wyndham area - 179 calls for assistance

At one point on yesterday, more than 28k electricity consumers in the state were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Damp conditions were forecast to persist along much of Queensland's east this coming days as a weather pattern continued to attract humidity against the coastal areas.

The following day was expected to become the most rainy day, with continued thunderstorm potential expected across multiple regions of both regions.

Medical Alert

Health officials cautioned that there was an higher risk of weather-related respiratory issues across the northern rural areas, especially given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This alert comes after historical occurrences where similar conditions led to major medical consequences in the region.
