This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
