Trump's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
