Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
